"Happy Heifers"
(...Bottle Calves from May - October...)
Craig and Heidi started
raising dairy calves last year. Each dairy calf is about 1 day to 1 week old
when they get them. They are held in a 4x5 calf hut, and 4 to 5 ft. of yard
to run around. Each hut and yard has gravel covered with sawdust. Each
calf has a bucket of grain, a braden bottle, a bucket of water, and some hay
to get used to it. Every morning and afternoon they receive a bottle of
milk.
Many guests like to help with
those chores as you just can't help but fall in love with those little
babies. Once they are 8 weeks old, they receive only 1 bottle per day for 1
week, the amount of grain and hay increases and after that they'll spend
another 4 days in their house before they "graduate". This method, amount of time, and love
given to these heifers may seem unconventional to some, however we believe
we raise very "Happy Heifers", which will someday make real good, friendly
and healthy milk cows.
Our calves and bigger heifers
are very affectionate and easy to handle. Most of our calves have German
names—and funny enough, they listen to them. Each calf is on a strict
vaccination schedule.
